The Eifeler Seehütte at Riedener Waldsee: Our Tips
There are some weekends when you don’t need a big trip at all. That’s exactly how we felt this time. On a hot summer day, we simply wanted to get out of the city, enjoy some nature, eat well and jump into a lake in between. Our choice fell on the Eifeler Seehütte at Riedener Waldsee.
And honestly, we couldn’t have picked a better spot. The Eifeler Seehütte is made for a little escape into nature. As soon as we arrived, it was easy to see why so many people recommend this spot in the Eifel for a relaxing weekend.
The Eifeler Seehütte sits right by the water, surrounded by dense forests, gentle hills and a surprising amount of peace and quiet. Instead of traffic noise, all you hear are birds singing and, every now and then, the laughter of people enjoying a swim in the lake.
These are exactly the kind of places we love. Everything feels a little slower here. No one seems to be in a hurry, and after just a few minutes, you start wondering why you don’t plan weekends like this much more often.

The restaurant at Eifeler Seehütte
Before we even thought about checking out our room, we were drawn straight to the terrace. And honestly, for us, it’s the real heart of the Eifeler Seehütte.
The restaurant’s spacious corner terrace sits right by the water. From our table, we could look out over Riedener Waldsee and let our eyes wander all the way to the forest covered hills of the Eifel. It’s hard to imagine a more idyllic spot for a long, lazy lunch.
The menu offers just the right mix of comfort food and lighter options: classic favourites like schnitzel, fresh salads, fish and seasonal specialities, along with vegetarian dishes. Perfect when you’ve worked up a proper appetite after a day out in nature.
We went for a fresh salad and a classic schnitzel with fries. Sometimes that’s all you need: simple, tasty food in a beautiful setting.
And of course, coffee, cake and ice cream had to follow. For us, that’s simply part of a good day out!
The service was just as warm and welcoming. We immediately felt at home and could have easily stayed on the terrace for another hour. With a view like this, it honestly isn’t hard at all.
If you manage to get a table on the terrace, you’ll quickly understand why.
A Cosy Stay at Riedener Waldsee
For our stay, we booked the top floor suite* and immediately felt right at home. The interior is exactly our kind of style: lots of wood, warm natural tones and a cosy feel without being overdone. It feels more like a lovingly decorated holiday apartment than a hotel room, which we absolutely loved.
What we loved most, though, were the two balconies. Sitting there with a cup of coffee and looking out over Riedener Waldsee was the perfect way to start our day. Needless to say, the coffee often ended up sitting there a little longer than planned.
Thanks to the coffee machine and kettle in the room, we didn’t even have to leave the room to make it happen. There’s also a cosy seating area in the living space, which is perfect if the weather isn’t playing along or you simply want to wind down in the evening.
We also really loved the bathroom. The spacious rain shower with its starry sky almost gives you that little wellness feeling, and after a hot summer day, a refreshing shower felt absolutely perfect. Just wonderful!
By the way, it doesn’t necessarily have to be the suite. The four rooms* one floor below also have beautiful views of the lake and feel just as cosy. Sitting there, we couldn’t help but wonder how magical this place must be in winter. Snow outside, the lake frozen over and a steaming cup of tea inside.
We’d love to come back in a completely different season. Or even better: all of them!

Breakfast with a Lake View
Whenever we stay at a hotel, breakfast is almost always one of our highlights. We love a nice breakfast buffet and usually start looking forward to that first coffee or glass of juice the night before. So we were especially happy that breakfast at the Eifeler Seehütte didn’t disappoint either.
Breakfast is served buffet style and offers just the right selection for a relaxed start to the day. Fresh bread rolls, a choice of cold cuts, cheese, eggs, muesli, fruit, as well as coffee, tea and juices. Not huge, just exactly right.
And with a second cup of coffee in hand, it’s even easier to stay on the terrace a little longer.
Breakfast is also available to non hotel guests, by the way. So if you live nearby and fancy a relaxed breakfast with a view of Riedener Waldsee, we can definitely recommend the Eifeler Seehütte. Especially in summer, sitting outside is just lovely and the perfect way to start the day at a slower pace.

Activities Around the Lake
Of course, we didn’t spend the entire weekend sitting on the terrace. As tempting as that would have been. There’s actually quite a bit to discover around Riedener Waldsee, and you can easily reach everything on foot.
What we loved most was how pleasantly low key everything feels. No huge entertainment complex, no crowded promenade and no loud music. Just nature, plenty of greenery and the perfect mix of relaxation and a few little things to do.
Right next to the Eifeler Seehütte, you’ll find an outdoor fitness trail with different exercise stations. So if you like to get a little movement in before breakfast, this is the perfect spot.
You can also go for a run or enjoy a leisurely walk along the forest paths around the lake and through the surrounding area.
Families are well catered for here, too. Right by the lake, next to the Seehütte, there’s a lovely playground where kids can burn off some energy while parents enjoy the view over the water.
There’s also a small boat rental right on the shore. During the season, you can rent pedal boats and canoes here, among other things. We can imagine that Riedener Waldsee must have a completely different atmosphere when you see it from the water.
Summer Swimming at Riedener Waldsee
One of the main reasons we chose Riedener Waldsee in the first place was the chance to jump into the water on a hot summer day. And of course, we couldn’t resist.
The lake has a well kept grassy area with both sunny and shaded spots. We especially liked how clean and tidy everything felt while still keeping its natural character.
Swimming takes place in a designated area, which also makes the lake an appealing option for families with younger children. However, a little heads up if you’re travelling with toddlers: there’s no shallow beach area here. Instead, you enter the deeper water via a ladder from the jetty.
There’s also a small floating platform in the middle of the lake. If you feel like it, you can swim out, take a little break and simply enjoy the view across the water.
Especially on warm summer days, we can hardly think of a more idyllic place to spend a few relaxing hours and switch off.

Al Lago: The Italian Restaurant by the Lake
If you’re staying for a few days, you don’t have to eat at the same restaurant every evening. Just a few minutes’ walk away on the opposite side of the lake, you’ll find a stylish Italian restaurant with a terrace right by the water.
The setting is just as beautiful and makes a lovely alternative to the Eifeler Seehütte. The menu at Al Lago features a great selection of classic Italian dishes, from antipasti and homemade pasta to crispy pizza, fish, meat and delicious desserts. There’s definitely something for everyone.
The Best Places to Visit Around the Eifeler Seehütte
If you’re staying at the Eifeler Seehütte for a few days, it’s definitely worth exploring the surrounding area. The best part is that many of the region’s highlights are just a short drive away. So you can enjoy a slow breakfast in the morning and still be right in the middle of your next little adventure a few minutes later.
Monreal: The Picture Perfect Village in the Eifel
Monreal had been on our wish list for a while. So when we realised that this little half timbered village is only about 15 minutes from the Eifeler Seehütte, the decision was easy.
And what can we say? It was absolutely worth the visit!
For us, Monreal is one of the prettiest villages in the Eifel. Beautifully restored half timbered houses line the streets, while the Elz River winds its way through the village and the ruins of Löwenburg and Philippsburg tower above it all.
What we loved most, though, is that Monreal doesn’t feel overly polished or touristy at all. There are no endless souvenir shops or crowded streets. Instead, you can simply wander through the village, stop on one of the little bridges and discover new photo spots around every corner.
If you’re up for a little hike, you can also make your way up to the two castle ruins. The trail isn’t particularly long, and the view over the rooftops of Monreal is definitely worth the climb.
Our tip: Take your time. Monreal isn’t a place you want to rush through just to tick it off your list. Grab a coffee, for example at the Altes Pfarrhaus, sit by the water and simply enjoy the atmosphere. That’s exactly what this little village is made for.
Maria Laach and Lake Laach
Just around 20 minutes from the Eifeler Seehütte, you’ll find Maria Laach Abbey. Even if monasteries aren’t usually your thing, we’d still recommend adding a stop here to your itinerary.
The impressive abbey was founded way back in 1093 and is considered one of Germany’s most important Romanesque monastery complexes. Despite its history, the whole site feels wonderfully relaxed and doesn’t feel like a typical museum destination at all.
We especially loved that you can easily combine a visit with a walk around Lake Laach. The largest lake in Rhineland Palatinate was formed around 13,000 years ago by a massive volcanic eruption. Pretty crazy when you think about how peaceful the landscape looks today.
If you have a little more time, you can rent a boat at the boat rental or simply follow the walking trail around the lake. Afterwards, it’s worth stopping by the monastery shop, where you’ll find lots of regional products, books and little souvenirs.
You can also grab a bite to eat at the restaurant or café and round off your visit in a relaxed way.

The Nürburgring: A Change of Pace
If you’re in the mood for a little more action, the Nürburgring is also just a short drive away.
Even if you’re not die hard motorsport fans, it’s worth checking the event calendar. Races, festivals and all kinds of events take place here throughout the year. You can also join guided tours of the grounds or visit the motorsport experience centre for a behind the scenes look at one of Germany’s most famous racetracks.
Ahrweiler: Half Timbered Houses, Wine & Holiday Vibes
Ahrweiler charmed us right away. After just a few minutes wandering through the old town, we knew we could easily have spent a few more hours here. Little streets, beautifully restored half timbered houses and the almost completely preserved town walls give the town so much character.
Honestly, Ahrweiler doesn’t need a long to do list. The best way to experience it is simply to wander through the little streets, pop into a wine shop or two and find a sunny spot outside for a coffee or a glass of wine along the way.
If you’re into wine, the Ahr Valley is definitely the place to be. Around Ahrweiler, you’ll find plenty of wineries, wine shops and cosy wine taverns. One of our favourites was Winzerhof Körtgen. Its idyllic courtyard is the perfect spot to relax under the palm trees with local wines and regional specialities. Exactly the kind of place you want to end a summer day.
Another highlight is Weingut Försterhof with its unique wine terraces. The unusual architecture is a little reminiscent of the work of Antoni Gaudí and Friedensreich Hundertwasser, yet somehow blends beautifully into the surrounding vineyards.
From the terrace, you get a wonderful view over the Ahr Valley and can simply sit back with a glass of wine and enjoy the scenery. It almost feels a little like being on holiday in the south of France, just in the middle of Germany.
More Places to Discover
Of course, there are plenty more places to discover around the Eifeler Seehütte. Koblenz, where the Rhine and Moselle meet, is also just over an hour away. If you’d rather stay in nature, you’ll find countless hiking trails, cycling routes and scenic viewpoints right in the Eifel.
That mix is exactly what we loved about the area. One minute you’re enjoying a quiet day by the lake, and the next you can head off for a little adventure.
You can have breakfast by the lake in the morning, wander through a half timbered village at lunchtime, sit among the vineyards in the afternoon or end the day with a walk through the forest. Nothing is ever far away, yet every day can feel completely different.
For us, that’s exactly what makes this region so special.
Our Take on the Eifeler Seehütte
Our weekend at the Eifeler Seehütte was another reminder that you don’t have to travel far to truly switch off. The combination of the cosy accommodation, the terrace right by the lake, delicious food and all the beautiful places to explore nearby really won us over.
Whether you’re looking for a relaxing weekend, want to take a dip in Riedener Waldsee or explore the Eifel, the Eifeler Seehütte is the perfect base for all of it. We definitely won’t be visiting for the last time. Next time, we’ll simply bring a little more time with us. Because honestly, you can never have too much of it here.
