Mykonos – boho style and stunning beaches
Our trip to Mykonos wasn’t actually planned at all. We had already booked our stay in Portugal instead. But then, 10 days before departure, the pandemic threw a spanner in the works. Portugal was declared a high-risk area. If we had gone there anyway, they would have been obliged to go into a long quarantine. A new plan therefore had to be drawn up quickly. After some research, we found a cheap flight to Mykonos and a suitable accommodation. But wait, isn’t Mykonos just for the super-rich and jetsetters? Admittedly, Mykonos is not necessarily a bargain vacation destination. But even though we are not jet-setters, we fortunately decided to fly to this beautiful island and boho paradise and now show you our favorite places.
Acrogiali Beach Hotel Mykonos
Hotel Acrogiali Beach is located on the beautiful Platis Gialos beach, a sheltered bay with turquoise-blue, shallow water. Even though the short notice of our trip meant that we didn’t have much choice when it came to picking a hotel, our choice of the Acrogiali Hotel was an absolute hit!
The hotel, built in Cycladic style with whitewashed walls, offers a restaurant and a few rooms with sea views. The remaining rooms are located in two-storey bungalows in a well-kept small garden area behind behind the lobby area.
The included breakfast buffet was varied and absolutely excellent. You could choose between many Greek specialties, but also internationally popular classics, such as scrambled eggs or croissants were on offer.
A narrow footpath runs directly in front of the hotel and the beautiful white sandy beach begins right behind it. The crystal-clear water is perfect for swimming, and the beach loungers for hotel guests are equipped with a service button for a hassle free time at the beach. So you can have snacks and drinks brought directly to your beach lounger at any time and spend wonderfully lazy hours by the sea. Thumbs up for the Acrogiali Beach Hotel*!
There are quite a few amazing boho style locations in Mykonos to choose from. We decided that we couldn’t miss out on one of the boho vibe highlights of the island.
Scorpios Beachclub Mykonos
If I could have built a beach club myself, it would probably look pretty much the same as Scorpios. I fell in love with the place in a heartbeat.
Super nice boho style furniture and decoration and a small beautiful beach with turquoise water. It was perfect in every way! We arrived at 11am when they opened and it was very quiet and relaxed. However, if you want use one of the beach loungers or get a table in the afternoon, you should definitely book in advance. You can make yourself comfortable in the cozy lounge furniture, on the beach or in the restaurant. Or do you fancy a little shopping spree? No problem. The beautiful Bazaar, a bedouin tent which is part of Scorpios Beach Club, you can find a handpicked selection of beautiful clothing brands, accessories and jewellery. We will definitely be back and next time we will stay the whole day!
Mykonos town – a great day trip
The bus to Mykonos Town departed just around the corner from our hotel. It was quick and easy and finding a cab on Mykonos can be a challenge.
We immediately felt at home in this picturesque little town. The many small roads are just so nice and it’s lovely to go for a stroll. Countless shops, cafés and restaurants offer a wide variety of goods and cater for the culinary well-being of visitors. And with a bit of luck, you might meet the city’s mascot – Petros the pelican.
Our tips for Mykonos Town: Of course, take photos of the windmills and visit the old harbor. Afterwards explore the many little alleyways and soak up the great atmosphere and the hustle and bustle of Mykonos town. Not to forget, a little bit of shopping is also a great way to spend yout time in town. My favorite boutique: Pitusa. I literally wanted to buy EVERYTHING in there!!
Mykonos Town is a picture perfect place but it can get very busy so best come early if you want to avoid the crowds. If you are looking for a good nightlife then obviously you need to be there in the evenings.
Our favorite restaurant on Mykonos: Nikolas Tavern
We took a walk from our hotel along the coast and quickly came to the next bay – Paraga Beach. We found the probably most romantic beach taverna in Mykonos there right by the sea. Delicious food, chairs and tables on the beach, feet in the sand. The perfect location for a relaxed dinner for growns ups whilst the kids and run around at on the beach and play.
Paradise Beach – it lives up to its name
When you walk through the brightly painted gate of Paradise Beach, you know why the beach has its name. At least that’s how we felt when we got there – a true little paradise. We looked for a spot on the right-hand side of the beach where it is often less busy. Our new friends, who we met the day before in Nikolas’ taverna, were keen to show us their favorite beach. And the trip there was really worth it.
We really enjoyed the super chilled-out hippie and bohemian atmosphere. The sea here was also great for swimming and the water was chrystal clear.
On Paradise Beach, we were able to enjoy a bit of the Mykonos jet-set lifestyle and I was treated to ice-cold champagne with strawberries in the shade of the parasols. What a fantastic afternoon! (Thank you, Team Austria!) Cheers!
Another loveley place in Mykonos to hang out at the beach whilst sipping champagne would be Psarrou Beach.
Psarou Beach and the legendary Nammos
We found this beautiful bay after just a few minutes walk from our hotel. I am repeating myself yet again: white sand, turquoise sea – many beaches on Mykonos are just as perfect as the ones on Formentera. At the western end of the bay you can find one of the legendary Mykonos hotspots for celebrities and the super-rich. Nammos. The restaurant and adjoining beach club is a get together for celebrities and mostly very rich people. Nammos offers a really nice ambience and a few boho vibes, too. If you fancy a bit of shopping, you can simply walk a few meters further to Nammos Village. This is made for everyone who can afford to go shopping in this luxury open-air mall with some of the best-known designers in the world. However, we only put our feet in the water and then walked back to our hotel. It was nice to have visited Psarou Beach!
Last but not least, we have another tip for a great beach club for you, because Mykonos is famous for them.
JackieO’ Beach Club Mykonos – Cocktails, pool and drag show
This time we’re not going to Paradise Beach but to Super Paradise Beach instead! Yes, there’s that one, too. The Beach Club is divided into three areas: the pool area by the bar on the cliff with fantastic views over the bay and the sea, the whirlpool, and of course the beach. JackieO’ also has a great boho-style restaurant and a boutique.
In the evenings, the club is known for its legendary drag shows, which are the kick-off for wild parties, dancing and lots of glamor and glitz.
Our verdict on Mykonos is that we absolutely loved it and will definitely be back one day. I really didn’t have Mykonos on my travel list and without the spontaneous, forced change of itinerary we probably wouldn’t have ended up there. But we are grateful that it turned out this way, because we were captivated by the beauty of the island.
And Portugal, we’ll come to visit you another time…
