Agia Galini, Crete: Our Favorite Highlights and Travel Tips
Agia Galini is one of those places that is surprisingly difficult to describe. Normally, we are not the kind of people who return to the same destination again and again. After all, there are simply too many beautiful places in the world that we still want to discover. And yet, year after year, we find ourselves coming back to this small seaside town on Crete’s southern coast. Sometimes only for a few days, but somehow no trip to Crete feels complete without a stop in Agia Galini.
Maybe it’s the whitewashed houses climbing the hillside, the cosy tavernas along the harbour, or the laid-back atmosphere that seems to fill the air. Or perhaps it’s simply that special feeling that welcomes us every time we drive down the winding road into town. Agia Galini captured our hearts from the very first visit and, to this day, has lost none of its charm. For us, it remains one of the most beautiful and atmospheric places on Crete.
The Story Behind Agia Galini
Agia Galini is a small seaside town on Crete’s southern coast, home to around 650 residents.
Although Agia Galini is best known today for its cosy tavernas, small harbour and laid-back atmosphere, the town has a history that stretches back centuries. Even in ancient times, it served as an important port where goods from Crete’s inland regions were shipped across the Mediterranean. Later, Agia Galini became known as a fishing and trading village before tourism gradually found its way to the south coast.
One of the town’s most fascinating stories is its connection to Greek mythology. According to legend, Daedalus and Icarus began their famous flight from the hills above Agia Galini. Whether that’s actually true is open to debate. However, the views from up there are spectacular enough to make the story seem at least a little believable.
By the way, the word Galini means “peace” or “serenity” in Greek. After several visits, we can confidently say that the name suits the town perfectly.
Where to Stay in Agia Galini: Our Favourite Hotels
Palazzo Greco
When we stay in Agia Galini, we usually choose Hotel Palazzo Greco, which is located on the hillside above the village along the cliffs and offers an incredible view down over the bay, the beach, and the sea.
It is especially popular for its wide sea views, peaceful location, and beautiful pool terrace. The hotel is ideal for couples or guests looking for tranquility, but children are also welcome. Recently, many of the rooms have been renovated and now feature a cozy, simple natural style with subtle boho elements.
We love having breakfast on the terrace when the weather is nice, which is usually the case. The breakfast buffet is not particularly large, but it is thoughtfully prepared and always includes a selection of local specialties. In addition, the location of the Palazzo Greco is perfect in our eyes. From the hotel, you can reach both the village centre and the harbour in just a few minutes on foot. Likewise, the long beach with its bars and restaurants is only a short walk away.
Parolos Irini Mare
The Paralos Irini Mare is one of those places that instantly creates a relaxed boho atmosphere. Set slightly above the coastline and surrounded by greenery, the hotel enjoys lovely views towards the sea while feeling both peaceful and open at the same time. The beach is just a short walk away, and Agia Galini can also be reached easily. Even so, the resort retains a calm and secluded feel, making it something of a hidden retreat away from the crowds.
What we especially love is the spacious layout, with plenty of greenery, open spaces and relaxed spots to unwind around the pool area. Everything feels effortless and laid-back, with no shortage of boho charm. It’s exactly the kind of place where you can arrive, switch off and settle into holiday mode straight away.
Astoria Hotel
The hotel is just a short stroll from the harbour, the tavernas and the beach, making it the perfect base for exploring Agia Galini on foot. During our stay at Hotel Astoria, we stayed in a room with a private rooftop terrace, which was a real highlight. From up there, we enjoyed beautiful views across the rooftops of Agia Galini all the way to the sea. We especially loved spending time there in the morning and at sunset.
Overall, Hotel Astoria stands out for its welcoming atmosphere, central location and thoughtful design. It’s an excellent choice for anyone who wants to stay right in the heart of Agia Galini while still enjoying plenty of charm and comfort.

Dining in Agia Galini: The Best Restaurants and Tavernas
Restaurant Pantheon
Whenever we want to enjoy one of the best views in Agia Galini over dinner, Pantheon is usually our first choice. Perched on a rooftop terrace above the harbour, the restaurant offers stunning views across the bay, the harbour and the Libyan Sea. Alongside authentic Greek and Mediterranean dishes, it’s the spectacular setting and genuinely friendly service that keep drawing us back. We’ve spent many wonderful evenings here over the years and have never been disappointed.

Charlie’s Place
Whenever we are in Agia Galini, a visit to Charly is an absolute must. Why? Because places like Charlie’s Place are hard to find. It’s unique, full of character and still somewhat of a hidden gem. The owner (Charly, of course) is a one-man show and does everything in his tavern himself. Cooking, serving, cashing up, drinking raki with the guests and washing up. Um zu Charlie’s Place zu gelangen, muss man vor dem Ortseingang von Agia Galini einem staubigen Feldweg folgen, der von der Hauptstraße abgeht.
A self-written sign points the way, as you can’t see the tavern from the main road. Charly serves authentic Cretan cuisine, and the choice on the menu is surprisingly large for a solo chef that does everything else himself as well. But if you come to eat at Charly’s, you have to be patient. Our advice? Don’t show up at Charlie’s Place completely ravenous, and definitely don’t schedule anything afterwards.

Onar
If you enjoy fish and seafood while staying in Agia Galini, Onar is a place you shouldn’t miss. Perched above the harbour, it’s one of our favourite spots in town for fresh seafood and traditional Cretan cuisine.
Depending on the day’s catch, the menu features a variety of fresh fish and seafood dishes, complemented by classic starters and traditional Cretan specialities. If you appreciate fresh ingredients and are looking for a relaxed evening with excellent food, Onar is a fantastic choice.

Romantika
If you’d like to dine with your feet almost in the sand, we can highly recommend Romantika Beach Bar Restaurant. Located right on the beach just outside the centre of Agia Galini, it offers lovely views of the sea and the Paximadia Islands. The menu features Greek favourites, fresh fish, wood-fired pizzas, as well as a selection of meat and pasta dishes. The relaxed beachfront setting is exactly our kind of place, and we always enjoy spending an evening here listening to the sound of the waves.

Taverna Kipos at the Campsite
If you’re looking for a more relaxed alternative to the tavernas in the centre of Agia Galini, we can highly recommend Taverna Kipos at the No Problem campsite. Set right next to the pool and surrounded by lush greenery, it has a wonderfully laid-back atmosphere that feels made for long summer evenings on Crete.
In addition to the regular menu, there are daily specials featuring Cretan and Mediterranean dishes. What impressed us most was the excellent value for money, with generous portions and fair prices. It’s a great option for anyone looking to explore a different side of Agia Galini’s food scene, away from the more obvious choices in the village centre.
Restaurant Alikes – Agia Galini
The beautiful Alikes taverna is located on the edge of Agia Galini harbor. This is exactly the kind of taverna that comes to mind when you picture a classic Greek holiday: simple, authentic and full of charm. From there you have a wonderful view of the bay, the harbor and the wide, blue sea. Expect honest Greek cooking, simple, authentic and full of flavour. Nothing here is fancy or pretentious, and that’s exactly what we love about these simple Greek tavernas. Friendly service and simple but good dishes making this place worth a visit. Crete at its best!
What to Do in Agia Galini: Activities, Shopping and More
While Agia Galini isn’t a destination filled with must-see sights, it’s the kind of place where we’re never short of things to do.
Beyond its beaches and tavernas, Agia Galini has plenty waiting to be explored. We especially love wandering through the village’s narrow, winding alleys, where you’ll stumble upon charming little boutiques, souvenir shops, and stores filled with authentic Cretan products tucked between whitewashed walls.
It’s the perfect place to pick up a taste of Crete to take home with you: golden olive oil, fragrant honey, wild herbs, handmade soaps, and beautifully crafted ceramics. You’ll also come across lovely linen textiles and woven bags in many corners of the village, ideal as stylish and practical souvenirs.
And whatever you do, don’t miss a stop at the local bakery. Fresh bougatsa, sweet pastries, and warm, freshly baked bread are already calling from the display. Honestly, walking past without going in on an empty stomach feels almost impossible.
For a little break in between exploring, a massage is a great option such as at Galini Massage and Wellness Services Agia Galini or at Thailand Massage Agia Galini, both offering a relaxed way to unwind and recharge.
If you prefer something more active, head over to Karolos Minigolf right by the beach for a round of mini golf. It is a lovely activity for families, couples, or simply a relaxed evening by the sea.
What we love most, however, is simply wandering through the narrow streets, browsing in small shops, and stopping now and then for a coffee. That is exactly what, for us, gives Agia Galini its special charm.
Places to visit around Agia Galini
Agia Galini is not only one of the most beautiful holiday resorts on Crete’s southern coast, but also the perfect starting point for exciting excursions in the surrounding area. Whether you are looking to discover dreamy beaches, impressive nature, or cultural sights, the area around Agia Galini offers plenty of highlights.
If you do not just want to relax by the beach, you will also find many rewarding excursion destinations nearby. In fact, the surroundings of Agia Galini are full of places that are perfect for a half-day or full-day trip, offering plenty of variety for exploring the region.
Little Triopetra: Unser Geheimtipp an der Südküste Kretas
Only about 35 to 40 minutes west of Agia Galini lies Little Triopetra, a beach that for us is one of the most beautiful places on Crete. Although the bay is no longer a true hidden gem, it is still much quieter here than on many other beaches on the island. That is exactly why we always enjoy coming back here.
With its crystal clear water, striking rock formations, and relaxed atmosphere, this small bay offers everything we love about Crete’s southern coast. If you are looking for a special beach away from the larger tourist resorts, you should definitely add Little Triopetra to your list.
Another reason why we keep coming back here are the two tavernas Apanemia and Vasilis, located directly on the beach. After a few hours in the water, there is hardly anything better than enjoying fresh fish, Greek starters, or a salad with a sea view.
The combination of a beautiful swimming bay with a sandy beach and two really good tavernas makes Little Triopetra a perfect destination for a day trip from Agia Galini. It is truly picturesque and absolutely stunning.

Matala: Hippie vibes, caves and turquoise blue sea
In addition, Matala is especially known for its famous hippie caves. It is said that even Cat Stevens and Bob Dylan lived there for a time in the late 1960s. Nowadays, some of the caves can be visited for an entrance fee. However, since I suffer from a fear of heights, this activity only appealed to me to a limited extent. Afterwards, it is worth strolling through the small streets of the village or taking a break on the beach.
Of course, in Matala you can also simply sit by the sea and enjoy yourself in one of the many tavernas, cafés, or restaurants. That is exactly why the village is one of the most popular excursion destinations on Crete’s southern coast for many visitors.

The Odigetria Monastery
The trip to Matala can also be perfectly combined with a visit to Moni Odigitria Monastery. The monastery was built as early as the 14th century, designed like a fortress in the mountainous landscape of the Asterousia range. Even today, parts of the old defensive walls and the historic escape tower are still preserved.
You can also visit a former monk’s cell, which gives a good impression of what monastic life used to be like. In addition, various objects are on display that were once used in the monks’ daily routines, including an old oil press and traditional tools.
What impressed us most was the peaceful atmosphere within the monastery grounds. During our visit, we were almost completely alone, which made the place feel even quieter and more untouched. At the same time, it felt as if time was moving a little more slowly here.
Before you finally head back, you should definitely stop by the small monastery shop. It offers local products such as soaps, creams, honey, olive oil, raki, and traditional sweets. This way, you can treat yourself and also pick up a lovely souvenir to take home.
Agios Georgios Taverna and Beach
The small hippie style taverna is located directly on the beach of the same name and invites you to spend a relaxed day on its terrace. The owner Geogios, with his magnificent full beard and sparkling eyes, is a real original and we always feel very welcome and at home in his taverna. Agios Georgius is a real happy-place where you can forget all your worries and simply linger and enjoy life. All the food that we have tried so far was great, our absolute favorite dish is the shrimp pasta. Not even in Italy does it taste this good! Yuuuum! And to end the day nicely, but depending on the season, you can watch a divine sunset from there with a drink in your hand. Amen.
Agios Georgios is located about 20 kilometers west of Agia Galini and can be reached in around 25 to 30 minutes by car. The small bay, with its long pebble beach and crystal clear water, is always inviting for a swim. We have only been there during low season and it was always wonderfully relaxed and restful.
Boat trip to the Paximadia Islands
One of the most beautiful activities in Agia Galini for us is the boat trip to the Paximadia Islands. We have already been out with Captain Nikos Boat Trips twice now, which basically says everything about how much we enjoyed it.
We especially enjoyed jumping from the boat into the crystal clear water again and again and spending time in the small bay with its pebble beach. Meanwhile, Nikos prepares a delicious buffet lunch directly on the beach for the guests. Everything is rather simple, but that is exactly what gives the tour its charm for us. Authentic, uncomplicated, and simply a really beautiful day on the water.
Cooking class on a Cretan farm
If you want to experience Crete away from beaches and tavernas, we can recommend a cooking class on a traditional farm. Together with the hosts, you prepare various Cretan dishes and, along the way, learn more about the local ingredients and the island’s traditional cuisine.
The best part comes at the end: after cooking, you naturally sit down together to enjoy the meal. And because you helped prepare the dishes yourself, everything tastes just a little bit better.
For us, it was a wonderful experience and a great way to get to know Cretan culture in a very personal and hands on way.

Preveli, probably the most famous beach in the south of Crete
It is especially famous for its palm grove, through which the Megalopotamos River flows before it reaches the Libyan Sea. The combination of river, palm forest, gorge, and beach makes Preveli one of the most extraordinary places on the island. We were rewarded with a gigantic view over the beach and the palm forest from above the bay. Tip: Sturdy shoes are recommended for this walk.
Down on the beach, on the edge of the palm forest, you can start your walk through the forest and enjoy the beautiful natural surroundings. There is also a snack bar on the beach with simple dishes and refreshments. We set out quite early in the morning and were able to explore the bay together with only a few other tourists, while later on, even in the low season, it became significantly busier. So, the early bird and all that…
Of course, there are many more activities in the area around Agia Galini, so feel free to get inspired.
Our final thoughts on Agia Galini
Agia Galini is for us one of those places that does not necessarily appear at the very top of a first Crete search, and that is exactly what perhaps makes it so special. It is not a place that needs to be loud to make an impression, but one that unfolds slowly.
Between the harbor, narrow streets, and the hills above the sea, a kind of atmosphere emerges that instantly slows everything down. You arrive, take a breath, and quickly realize that this is a place where you could easily stay a little longer.
For us, Agia Galini is not a place you simply tick off a list, but rather one you return to without thinking twice. And that probably says it all…
