Boho dreams in Austria

Several times I stumbled across one of the most beautiful boho hotels I have ever seen on the internet. Therefore, as an absolute Bohostyle lover, I knew immediately: I have to go there! But I didn’t have to fly to Bali or Tulum to end up in boho-paradise! Nor is the travel destination by the sea. Because a true dream for all bohemian lovers lies right in the middle of idyllic Salzburger Land in the Austrian Alps. More precisely, just a few minutes by car from the popular vacation resort of Maria Alm am Steinernen Meer and the summit of the Hochkönig.
The Boho Hotel and Restaurant Jufenalm
I arrived at the Boho Hotel Jufenalm* full of anticipation. Anticipation paired with skepticism. Could the hotel really be as beautiful as in the pictures? Have you experienced this before? Sometimes a place looks amazing on photos online but when you see it in real life, you can be disappointed by the reality. But not so at the Hotel Jufenalm! Quite the opposite. My expectations were even exceeded, because I hadn’t expected so much attention to detail.
Alpine meets Boho
After an incredibly personal and warm welcome and check-in, I was guided to my “Seesteg Plus” room. With a terrace by the natural pond and a fantastic view, the cozy furnishings and – hold on – my own sauna in the room, nothing was left to be desired. My room was located right at a small pond right next to the pool, so I could watch the fish in the water from my terrace.
Wellness, hiking and culinary delights
Whether cooling off in the natural pool, in the heated outdoor whirlpool, a visit to the sauna or a long hike in the countryside – there are many ways to relax. Unfortunately, the hotel does not offer massages – this would have rounded off the wellness experince at the hotel.
At the Jufenalm you can enjoy the gastronomic variety both inside and outside, and it was almost impossible for me to decide where I liked it better. Usually I love sitting outside more because I love fresh air. Apart from that, the terrace of the Boho Hotel Jufenalm* leaves absolutely nothing to be desired. Both the decor and the view are incredibly beautiful.
Both the restaurant The Modern Treehouse and the Treetop Bar inside are also lovingly designed with plenty of boho features. The restaurant impresses with a huge glass front from top to bottom, so you can also enjoy the wonderful moiúntain views to the fullest when sitting inside. I also loved the bar area, which is super cosy.
In addition to an excellent breakfast buffet, the kitchen offers local specialties as well as modern, internationally inspired dishes. And of course, it all tastes even better in this great boho ambience.
Prinzensee and Tom Almhütte
The Jufenalm is the perfect place to unwind. It’s away from the main road and just so peaceful and quiet. But if you want to be active, there is plenty to explore as well. The Jufenalm the perfect starting point for great excursions in the surrounding area. A nearby highlight is the Prinzensee lake, where you can take a refreshing dip or simply linger on its banks. From there, you can keep walking until you reach Tom’s alpine hut. Of course, after all that effort you have to reward yourself! At Tom’s (the name comes from the hut mascot Tom – a pug) it is modern and cozy at the same time. A large terrace with, again, fantastic views is a lovely spot to have a break from hiking or skiing. Here you will also find Austrian classics as well as a few international and more unusual dishes. One of them is very unusual even. I tried the Crazy Bowl with insects…well. At least it’s supposed to be healthy. But next time I’d rather have the dumplings.
If you are not into hiking, ou can also get to Tom’s hut very easily with the cable car from Maria Alm or Aberg. Tom’s Hütte is definitely a great place in the mountains to visit. Both in the summer and winter.
Maria Alm and the SEPP
Since I love to explore, I usually don’t stay at only one place during my holidays. So of course I chose to move from boho-wonderland Jufenalm to the nearest village named Maria Alm just a few minutes away by car, Firstly, because I found another great hotel there that I wanted to stay at, and secondly, because it is located in the village. This gave me the option do discover more things within walking distance and Maria Alm is another picture perfect place that is worth a visit.
In this respect, it was a great addition to add a few more days at the Hotel SEPP (Adults Only) in Maria Alm after my stay at Jufenalm. The Alpine Boutique Hotel SEPP* is part of the Eder Collection, which includes the classic Hotel Eder in the village center and also Tom’s Almhütte. If Adults Only is not an option for you because you are travelling with children, you can stay at the family-friendly Hotel Tante Frida* just across the street from Hotel SEPP, which is also part of the Eder Collection. Everything is catered for to make sure the little ones have a fun time while the parents can relax a bit, too.
A caravan on the roof and champagne for breakfast
Although I had expected a good breakfast at Hotel SEPP, I was surprised at how extensive and varied the breakfast buffet was. There was everything and more you could have hoped for. Definitely one of the best and most lovingly prepared breakfast buffets I have ever seen in a hotel of this size. Just like in the Jufenalm, you can dine in the SEPP in a beautiful, cozy boho atmosphere. The restaurant also offers a nice rooftop terrace with a view of the mountains. You can overlook the infinity pool while you sip a glass of wine or enjoy one of the many other delicacies. An old Airstream caravan was placed onto the rooftop terrace, which has been converted into a relaxation room. In any case, very hip, beautiful to look at and useful as well.
Sleeping at SEPP
The rooms at the Sepp are cosy and comfortable. Because many beautiful natural materials such as wood were used, which I always find very appealing. Even though Hotel SEPP not quite as boho as the Jufenalm, the rooms are lovingly designed, with nice extras such as a swing on the balcony or a movie screen in the room.
Active in Maria Alm
As Maria Alm is not just a winter sports paradise, there is also plenty to do here at other times of the year. The village is quite small, but nevertheless there is no shortage of activities. Whether it’s hiking, biking, a visit to the high ropes adventure park, the petting zoo, archery or countless other activities – there is no need toget bored. I particularly liked the forest slide park.
Afterwards, you can make yourself comfortable in one of the beautiful restaurants in Maria Alm to round off the day.
A newly dicovered love for mountains
To summarize, the Boho-Jufenalm, as well as Maria Alm, is a paradise for young and old and offers something for everyone. In addition, everyone I met was incredibly friendly and helpful. The nature and villages in Salzburger Land are beautiful and worth a visit at any time of year. I have truely discovered my love for mountains.
