Why This Little Hilltop Village Was High on My Travel List<\/h3>\n\n

Saint-Paul-de-Vence had been on my bucket list for years. I knew that the next time I visited the French Riviera, I simply had to stop by this small medieval village. Why? Because I had long been fascinated by its unique charm, the picturesque Proven\u00e7al scenery, and its winding cobblestone streets filled with a creative artistic atmosphere. My excitement to finally experience this special place in person couldn’t have been greater. Spoiler alert: it was the best decision I could have made! <\/p>\n\n

Getting There the Easy Way \u2013 No Rental Car Needed<\/h2>\n\n

This time, I decided not to rent a car. Although Nice Airport is only about thirteen kilometres away, the public transport network on the C\u00f4te d\u2019Azur works so well that I wanted to give it a try. From Nice, I took a quick train ride to Cagnes-sur-Mer, which took around fifteen minutes. There, I grabbed a pain au chocolat before hopping on bus 655<\/a><\/strong>, which runs roughly every thirty minutes during the day and takes you directly to Saint-Paul-de-Vence.For anyone who prefers gazing out of the window to searching for parking spaces, it\u2019s a pretty ideal way to travel. <\/p>\n\n

First Impressions Upon Arrival<\/h2>\n\n

From the bus, you already get a wonderful view of the village. From a distance, Saint Paul de Vence looks like a small nest of pale stone perched comfortably on the hillside, compact, warm, and quintessentially Proven\u00e7al.When I arrived in the afternoon, the village was quite busy. A long weekend naturally attracts plenty of day trippers. On my way to my accommodation, I wandered through the narrow streets as if I were walking through a living work of art. Small caf\u00e9s, ice cream parlors, restaurants, and countless galleries lined my path like scenes from a French movie.Here, an artist\u2019s studio. There, a sculpture resting in the shade of an olive tree. The atmosphere was lively, yet never hectic. It felt more as though the village had been blessed with an extra helping of French savoir vivre. <\/p>\n\n

A Village Steeped in History and Full of Charm<\/h2>\n\n

Saint Paul de Vence is one of the oldest fortified villages on the French Riviera, and you can feel its rich history wherever you go. Founded in the 9th century, surrounded by 16th century ramparts, and crisscrossed by cobblestone streets, it feels almost like a movie set that was never taken down. <\/p>\n\n

The village became especially famous through the artists who lived, worked, or simply sought inspiration here. Marc Chagall was so enchanted by Saint Paul de Vence that he chose it as his final resting place. Pablo Picasso was a regular visitor, as were Henri Matisse, Amedeo Modigliani, Jean Marais, and Fernand L\u00e9ger.Anyone who claims that art is not in the air has probably never wandered through these streets. Just a few minutes from the village, the Fondation Maeght is considered one of the most important venues for modern and contemporary art. The sculpture garden alone feels like a little wonderland. <\/p>\n\n

My Most Unusual Accommodation<\/h3>\n\n

My accommodation<\/a> was the highlight of the trip. I had booked a room above a caf\u00e9. Or rather, inside a caf\u00e9. Yes, I literally slept in a caf\u00e9.Caf\u00e9 Timoth\u00e9<\/a> is tucked away in one of the village\u2019s narrow streets, and getting to my room was quite an adventure. To reach it, I had to walk through the caf\u00e9, climb a staircase, and then squeeze through a small trapdoor in the floor. Anyone with knee problems or a fear of trapdoors might want to choose a different place to stay. I, on the other hand, found the whole experience wonderfully quirky and incredibly original. <\/p>\n\n

The caf\u00e9 is open from around 10 a.m. to 6 p.m. During those hours, the guests and I shared the space, including the restroom. Once the caf\u00e9 closed for the day, however, I had the entire place to myself and felt like the caf\u00e9\u2019s secret owner, complete with views from a cozy attic room<\/a> overlooking the rooftops of Saint Paul de Vence.The caf\u00e9 itself is wonderfully inviting and decorated in my favorite boho style. During opening hours, it is also a great place to enjoy healthy dishes and a delicious breakfast in a relaxed atmosphere. <\/p>\n
